FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

2008/2009 Calendar Features Beautiful and Talented women who are positive role models to young girls and their communities

Vancouver, BC November 12, 2007 – BT Girls Native American Women’s Calendar is excited to announce that the release of the BT Girls Native American Women’s Calendar will be on March 1, 2008. The BT Girls Native American Women’s Calendar is one of the most diverse calendars to hit the industry. The Calendar is the very first of its kind, showcasing First Nations women in high fashion and glamorous imagery.

A team of beautiful and talented models and top industry professionals are working together to produce sophisticated imagery of fashion and glamorous editorials. The calendar also pays homage to women that are positive role models to their communities and to the younger generation. The calendar is being created to showcase the beauty and talent of the women in this calendar to the world through mainstream fashion and modeling. The style of the calendar is the equivalent with popular high fashion magazines, but very much encompasses its own unique flavor, giving it a greater edge.

BT Girls Calendar: Native American Women’s Calendar 2008/2009 is a sixteen month calendar and will be for sale for the modest price of $20.00 each. Twelve models have been selected to model with The Baker Twins for their first 2008/2009 calendar. Each model will be featured with The Baker Twins in one month of the calendar.

“Every year we get asked to do a collaboration calendar with different models and different companies. We remember what it was like to want to be a model and how impossible that dream seemed to be. The world doesn’t realize how many beautiful and talented Native Women there are in this world. First Nations people may not account for a large population of Turtle Island, but we do exist. Each week we receive emails from aspiring models that expresses their desire to want to become a model. If we are going to do any type of collaboration we are first going to do it with our own people.” co-creator of the calendar, Shauna Baker said.

Co-creator, Shannon Baker, continued: “Our main objective in producing this calendar is to showcase the beauty and talent of First Nations people through imagery to the mainstream market. When many people think of Native American people they immediately think of the westernized image of First Nations people that has been long depicted in Hollywood movies. Many people do not know that many First Nations people are successful doctors, lawyers, teachers, actors, models, etc. In the media, there is almost no portrayal of First Nations people living in the present day. The world needs to stop stereotyping First Nations people and start showing this through the media, and that is what we are doing with this calendar.”

THE CREATORS:

BT Girls Native American Women’s Calendar is distinctive in that the calendar was started by two sisters who wanted to combine their experience of working in the entertainment industry and their experience as entrepreneurs to create a calendar that showcased the beauty and talent of First Nations people through imagery to the mainstream market.

Co-creators, Shannon and Shauna Baker are models, actors, spokespeople and entrepreneurs. They have been on a variety of television shows, films and videos. They recently made a celebrity guest appearance on ‘The Tyra Banks Show’. Both of the girls also played a role on an episode of the television show ‘Smallville’. Some of their acting experience also includes movies and films such as: “Tin Man’, ‘Sharp as Marbles’, ‘Night of Removal’, ‘Time after Place’, ‘Family Portraits’, ‘History Lesson’, ‘Magical History Tour’, ‘Xylophobia’, ‘Hard Way To Grow up” and more. They have been managing their own modeling careers for almost five years. They take their role as positive role models to younger generations very seriously and are currently spokespeople for ‘Say Magazine’. They are also owners of the website design company ‘Baker Twin Designs’.

Shannon Baker has educational and “hands-on” experience in Business Management. She has held a variety of management positions having worked as a Project Manager & Research Assistant for a Research Project at Simon Fraser University. Her relevant business experience includes working as a: Sales & Marketing Planner, Junior Accounting Assistant, Administrative Coordinator, Director Assistant, Information Communication Technology Trainer and Web Designer. Currently, she is near the completion of receiving her degree. Shannon Baker was one of 59 delegates that competed in the Miss Universe® Canada 2007 pageant where she was an award recipient winner of the Revlon® Award.

Shauna Baker has extensive management experience and some educational experience. For two and a half years Shauna worked as an Accountant for a prestigious renovations company in downtown Vancouver, BC. She has extensive experience in the retail business having managed a popular fashion clothing store called Buffalo Jeans where she was the number one seller across North America. She has also worked as an office manager for a busy Underwriting Insurance Company in Vancouver, BC. Her additional relevant business experience also includes being an: Office Manager, Administrative Manager, Retail Manager, Marketing Coordinator, Sales Representative and a Youth Conference Coordinator.

Fudge passed away last night/Uncle’s treatment in hospital

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

My Uncle was recently in a terrible accident at his work at the mine. I received the call about him on his way to the hospital in the ambulance. There was a chance that he may not survive and if he should survive there was the chance that he may never walk again. That instant was one of the scariest moments of my life. He was badly concussed and had severe hemorrhaging of the brain. A broken cheek bone and fracture on his cranium. We do not know the long term effects of his brain due to this accident. This all occurred this past Friday. We were lucky that what hit him was just in the right place.

The hospital where he was being treated does not have a good reputation for treating native people. The whole time he was in the hospital they placed him in a cot beside the cold emergency doors. He didn’t get his own hospital room. Some of the nurses were actually complaining in front of my family that they wanted his cot for other patients. The hemorrhaging of his brain ensued until Sunday and they were considering flying him to Vancouver. However, on the Sunday the hemorrhaging stopped and they scheduled his surgeries for that day. As soon as the internal bleeding discontinued they put him in a wheelchair where he was dozing in and out of consciousness because there wasn’t ‘enough beds’. After a day of not allowing him to eat to prepare for the surgery they told him that surgery was cancelled and they would do all of his surgeries in a months time. They told my family that he was free to leave the hospital until the surgeries. My family was more then happy to take him home after all of the poor treatment that he was receiving.

We had the same bad experience two years ago when my other uncle was dying in that hospital. My uncle passed away in that hospital two years ago from asbestos cancer. The nurses made last minutes of life a living hell on his death bed.

My family is making arrangements so that he can get treated in Vancouver instead of the Prince George hospital. We are very happy to have him alive and recovering. It is very unfortunate that my poor Uncle Shawn had to go through hell in that hospital.

When my dog Jake died a month and a half ago my elders said that it was for a reason. It was the way he died that was peculiar. He was hit by a train and yet he was left seemingly untouched. There was no blood or cut marks. It was as if he was hit and lay down on the side of the tracks and went to sleep. My people believe that our animals give their lives for their family. If there is going to be a death of a family member their animal willingly gives their life up to save that family member. I have also been told to take heed in my dreams. Previous to Jake’s death I was having bad dreams about my younger sister. I wonder if Jake gave his life up to save her.

Fudge passed away at three o’clock this morning. She walked up the steps looked at my step father and lay her head on his foot and passed away. She was Jake’s companion. She really missed Jake. We acquired her when we were twelve with our combined birthday money, babysitting savings and a big garage sale where we sold all of our childhood toys. Jake was just one year old when got Fudge. I didn’t cry as I did when Jake passed away. It seems fitting that she passed away since Jake and her were companions. They really loved each other.

Shannon and I finished three of our BT Girls Calendar photoshoots with Christine Charlie, Sophia Wuttunee & Inez Jasper. All of the girls did amazing jobs! None of them are professional models and a couple of the girls it was their very first photoshoot. We have 9 more BT Girls to do and then we will be sending them to our graphic designer and then the calendars will be printed late January. Yay!!!!! We have invested a lot of our time and energy into this calendar. For those of you who have followed our careers and work you already know that when we take on a project we give 110%. I created a myspace page for the calendar a couple weeks ago. Add it to your friend list please: www.myspace.com/btgirlscalendar

Some of you people are checking out the pictures we posted and complimenting on the calendar photos. What you may not know is that these images are NOT going to be in the calendar. The images that you have seen are photoshoots we did last year with Sophia Wuttunee and Morgan Green for the website and promotions. These images will not be in the calendar.

For the calendar, each girl will be having three photoshoots each, one theme photoshoot with Shannon and I, (Kind of like Americanas Next Top Model),
one high fashion photoshoot by herself and one t-shirt promotion photoshoot by herself. You will however see the t-shirt photoshoot (Like the one I posted of Christine Charlie below) but other then that you will have to wait patiently and buy the calendar to see the rest of the photos. www.thebtgirls.com

I helped out on a student film project a couple weeks ago. Check out the video when you get a chance: http://vimeo.com/357050

Have a safe Halloween everybody! Shannon and I are staying home tonight and going to work hard instead. No Halloween plans for us.

Peace & Love, Shauna-Mae
