Welcome to our new blog!

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Hi everyone,

This is our new blog. After many emails and messages we have finally put a blog on our website that you can respond to.

Our calendar starts now! I’m super excited. We worked on our calender for a straight year. We invested a lot of time, energy and finances into this project. I’m not expecting to make money off of the calendar project, I will be happy to break even. It is all about getting First Nations people in the mainstream media and to help promote all of the people that believe in this including all of the models, photographers, clothing designers, cinematographers, make-up artists, hair stylists, wardrobe stylists, and photo shoot assistants. If anyone purchases a calendar now, they get the four 2008 bonus months that include September, October, November and December. You can purchase them online at: www.thebtgirls.com

Shauna just recently landed a Tim Horton’s commercial. She seems to be on a commercial spree! She just finished filming a Discover Card commercial and she is already doing another commercial.  She films the Tim Horton’s commercial this week. And honestly, Shauna and I are big fans of Tim Horton’s. We get ’steeped teas’ and ‘timmy donuts’ there at least a few times a week.

It seems the film industry is booming again. The industry seemed to be so dry this past summer. Well, that was my experience anyway. It feels good to start auditioning on a regular basis again.

Speaking of emails and messages. I have received a lot of messages and emails from people asking why I haven’t responded to fan mails or messages. I realize that a lot of people get offended and take it personally when I do not respond or open messages. I must explain that I get hundreds of messages a week and those messages accumulate if I do not open them.

Also, a lot has been happening in my personal life. I recently just connected with my biological father and two  half-sisters from Saskatchewan. I have never met or seen them in my entire life. So, please do not take it personal when I do not respond to messages. Instead, try to be happy for me that I am now connecting with some new family. I am trying to make plans to meet them in person this October or November.

Until next time!

Baker Twins break stereotypes with Native American Women’s Calendar

Buying a new calendar for 2008 is still on my to-do list. With only 191 days left in the year, I figure it’s best to get a head start on 2009, so the release of a 16-month BT Girls Native American Women’s Calendar puts an end to my woes.

Cocreators Shannon and Shauna Baker, better known as the The Baker Twins, put it together as a way of celebrating the beauty and talent (hence BT Girls) of First Nations women across Canada and Washington State.

The calendar is a personal reflection of the twins’ own history and background as aboriginal women who have built successful modelling and acting careers. According to a media release, the girls were quoted as wanting to put an end to the westernized view of First Nations people.

“Many people do not know that many First Nations people are successful doctors, lawyers, teachers, actors, welders, nurses, singers, models, etc.” Shannon said. “In the media, there is almost no portrayal of First Nations people living in the present day. The world needs to stop stereotyping First Nations people and start showing this through the media, and that is what we are doing with this calendar.”

Each month displays one of the 12 women, all from different tribes, in a photo shoot with the Baker twins. A peek at the calendar reveals not only some beautiful women but also a very creative way of using up all those Straights lying around my house.

Wearing a strapless mini multi-layered dress made entirely of 21 different Georgia Straight newspapers, model Nettie Longee is featured in the month of May with a Baker Twins original design.
